Complete Text of the Universal Gate Chapter of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

At that time, Inexhaustible Intent Bodhisattva rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, joined his palms and facing the Buddha said: “World-Honored One, for what reason is Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva called ‘Avalokitesvara’?” The Buddha told Inexhaustible Intent Bodhisattva: “Good man, if innumerable hundreds of thousands of millions of beings who are suffering all kinds of distress hear of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and with all their mind call out his name, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva will immediately perceive their voices and all will gain liberation. If someone holds fast to the name of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, even if they enter a great fire, the fire will not burn them, all through this bodhisattva’s supernatural power. If swept away by a great flood, by calling his name they will immediately reach shallow waters. If hundreds of thousands of millions of beings seeking for gold, silver, lapis lazuli, mother-of-pearl, agate, coral, amber, pearls and other treasures enter the great sea, and if a black wind should blow their ships off course to the land of rakshasa demons, if among them there is even one person who calls the name of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, they will all be delivered from their troubles with the rakshasas. For this reason he is called Avalokitesvara.”

“If a person who faces execution calls on the name of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, the executioner’s sword will be broken into pieces and they will gain deliverance. If within the three-thousand-great-thousand lands there are yakshas and rakshasas who come to trouble and torment people, when they hear them calling the name of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, these evil demons will not even be able to look at them with their evil eyes, much less do them harm.” “Whether a person be guilty or not guilty, if they are bound in chains or fetters, by calling on the name of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, all such bonds will be severed and they will gain freedom. If in the three-thousand-great-thousand lands the land is full of enemies, and a merchant leader guides many merchants carrying precious treasures over treacherous roads, and one among them speaks these words: ‘Good men, do not be afraid! You should with all your minds call on the name of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. This bodhisattva bestows fearlessness upon living beings. If you call his name, you will be delivered from these evil-minded robbers!’ When the merchants hear this, they all together raise their voices, saying, ‘Hail to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva!’ And because they call his name, they are immediately able to gain deliverance.”

“Inexhaustible Intent! The authority and supernatural power of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Avalokitesvara are as mighty as this! If living beings who have much sexual desire constantly and reverently think of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, they will be freed from desire. If those who have much hatred constantly and reverently think of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, they will be freed from hatred. If those who are very foolish constantly and reverently think of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, they will be freed from foolishness.”

“Inexhaustible Intent! Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva possesses great supernatural powers such as these and confers many benefits. For this reason, living beings should constantly keep him in mind. If a woman wishes to have a son and worships and makes offerings to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, she will bear a son blessed with merit, virtue and wisdom. If she wishes to have a daughter, she will bear a daughter of good appearance and character, who in the past planted the roots of virtue and is loved and respected by all. Inexhaustible Intent! Such is the power of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. If any living being pays respect and makes offerings to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, their blessing will not be in vain. Therefore living beings should all accept and uphold the name of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.”

“Inexhaustible Intent! If there were a person who accepts and upholds the names of as many bodhisattvas as there are sands in sixty-two million Ganges Rivers and for his entire life offers them alms of food and drink, clothing, bedding and medicines, what do you think? Would the merit gained by this good man or good woman be abundant or not?” Inexhaustible Intent replied, “Very abundant, World-Honored One!” The Buddha said, “If there is a person who accepts and upholds the name of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and even just once makes obeisance and offers alms, the blessings gained by these two persons would be exactly equal and would not be exhausted even in hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, millions of kalpas. Inexhaustible Intent! Accepting and upholding the name of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva brings benefits such as these, immeasurable and boundless blessings!”

“Inexhaustible Intent Bodhisattva said to the Buddha, ‘World-Honored One, how does Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva travel in this Saha world? How does he preach the Dharma for living beings? How does he employ his power of expedient means?’”

The Buddha told Inexhaustible Intent Bodhisattva, “Good man, if there are living beings in the land who can be saved by someone in the body of a Buddha, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva immediately manifests himself in a Buddha body and preaches the Dharma for them.”

For those who can be saved by someone in the body of a young boy or girl, he immediately manifests in the body of a young boy or girl and preaches the Dharma for them.
For those who can be saved by someone in the body of a deva, naga, yaksha, gandharva, asura, garuda, kinnara, mahoraga, human or non-human being, he immediately manifests in all these forms and preaches the Dharma for them.
For those who can be saved by someone in the body of a Vajra-holding spirit, he immediately manifests in the body of a Vajra-holding spirit and preaches the Dharma for them.

“Inexhaustible Intent! Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva has accomplished such merits, and in various forms travels through all lands to liberate living beings. Therefore, you should all with one mind make offerings to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. This Bodhisattva Mahasattva Avalokitesvara can bestow fearlessness in situations of fear and urgent difficulty. For this reason, in this Saha world all call him the Bestower of Fearlessness.”

Inexhaustible Intent Bodhisattva said to the Buddha: “World-Honored One, I shall now make offerings to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.” He then removed from his neck a necklace of precious jewels worth hundreds of thousands of ounces of gold and presented it to him, saying: “Benevolent One, please accept this Dharma offering of precious jewels.” At that time Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva would not accept it. Inexhaustible Intent again said to Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva: “Benevolent One, out of compassion for us, please accept this necklace.” Then the Buddha told Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva: “Out of compassion for Inexhaustible Intent Bodhisattva and the four groups of believers, as well as the devas, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans and non-humans, you should accept this necklace.”

Then Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, out of compassion for the four groups and for devas, nagas, humans and non-humans, accepted the necklace and divided it into two portions: one portion he offered to Shakyamuni Buddha and the other portion he offered to the stupa of Buddha Many Jewels. “Inexhaustible Intent! Such is the freely exercised supernatural power of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva who wanders through the Saha world.”

At that time Inexhaustible Intent Bodhisattva posed this question in verse:

World-Honored One with perfect marks,
I now ask again about
That Buddha's son - for what reason
Is he named Avalokitesvara?

The Honored One of perfect marks
Replied in verse to Inexhaustible Intent:
Listen to the practice of Avalokitesvara,
Who skillfully responds in all places.

His vast vows are deep as the sea,
Throughout kalpas beyond conception.
Serving many thousands of millions of Buddhas,
He made great pure vows.

I will briefly tell you:
Hearing his name and seeing his body,
With mindful thought not in vain,
Can extinguish all suffering.

Even if someone has harmful intent
And pushes one into a pit of fire,
By mindfully invoking Avalokitesvara's power,
The fire pit becomes a pool.

Or if cast adrift on vast seas,
Amid dragons, fish and demon perils,
By mindfully invoking Avalokitesvara's power,
The waves cannot drown one.

Or if from Mount Sumeru's peak
One is pushed down by another,
By mindfully invoking Avalokitesvara's power,
Like the sun one dwells in space.

Or if pursued by evil men,
And cast down from Diamond Mountain,
By mindfully invoking Avalokitesvara's power,
Not a single hair will be harmed.

Or if surrounded by vicious bandits,
Each wielding a knife to harm,
By mindfully invoking Avalokitesvara's power,
They all give rise to compassion.

Or if meeting royal persecution,
About to be executed,
By mindfully invoking Avalokitesvara's power,
The sword breaks into pieces.

Or if imprisoned in shackles,
Hands and feet bound in chains,
By mindfully invoking Avalokitesvara's power,
One gains release naturally.

Through mantras and poisonous herbs,
Intended to harm the body,
By mindfully invoking Avalokitesvara's power,
They return to harm their sender.

Or if meeting evil rakshasas,
Poisonous dragons and various ghosts,
By mindfully invoking Avalokitesvara's power,
None dare to harm.

If fierce beasts surround one,
With sharp fangs and fearsome claws,
By mindfully invoking Avalokitesvara's power,
They flee swiftly in all directions.

If vipers and scorpions,
Breathe out poisonous smoke like fire,
By mindfully invoking Avalokitesvara's power,
At the sound they turn and leave.

When clouds thunder and lightning strikes,
Hail falls and rain pours,
By mindfully invoking Avalokitesvara's power,
They immediately disperse.

When beings are beset by hardship,
And oppressed by countless sufferings,
Avalokitesvara's power of wondrous wisdom
Can save the world from suffering.

Perfect in supernatural powers,
Widely skilled in wisdom and means,
Throughout lands in the ten directions,
There is no realm where he does not appear.

All the various evil destinies,
Of hell beings, ghosts and animals,
The sufferings of birth, old age, sickness and death,
Are gradually eliminated.

True contemplation, pure contemplation,
Contemplation of vast wisdom,
Compassionate contemplation and kind contemplation,
Constantly wished for, constantly revered.

Undefiled pure light,
Sun of wisdom destroying darkness,
Subduer of disaster, wind and fire,
Clearly illuminating the world.

Body of compassion, precepts like thunder,
Mind of kindness like wondrous great clouds,
Pouring dharma rain of sweet dew,
Quenching flames of affliction.

In lawsuits and disputes before officials,
In fearsome armies and battles,
By mindfully invoking Avalokitesvara's power,
All enemies scatter and disperse.

Wondrous sound, Avalokitesvara,
Brahma's sound, sound of ocean tides,
Surpassing worldly sounds,
Therefore should be constantly mindful.

In thought after thought have no doubt,
Avalokitesvara, pure sage,
In times of suffering, anguish and death,
Can provide support and protection.

Complete with all merits,
His compassionate eyes watch living beings,
His ocean of blessings is boundless,
Therefore should we bow in reverence.

At that time, the Bodhisattva Earth Holder rose from his seat, came forward and said to the Buddha: “World-Honored One! If there are living beings who hear this chapter on Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, the sovereign deeds, the universal gateway of manifestation, and supernatural powers, know that these people’s merit and virtue is not small.” When the Buddha spoke this Universal Gateway Chapter, eighty-four thousand living beings in the assembly all aroused the unequaled anuttara-samyak-sambodhi mind.

Vernacular Translation of “The Universal Gateway Chapter of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara”

At that time Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, joined his palms together and said to the Buddha: “World-Honored One! For what reason is Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara called Avalokitesvara?” The Buddha told Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent: “Good man! If countless hundreds of thousands of millions of living beings who are suffering from various afflictions hear of this Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara and wholeheartedly call his name, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara will immediately perceive their voices and they will all attain liberation. If someone holds the name of this Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, even if they enter a great fire, the fire cannot burn them, due to this Bodhisattva’s awesome spiritual power. If swept away by great floods, by calling his name they will immediately reach shallow waters. If hundreds of thousands of millions of living beings seeking gold, silver, lapis lazuli, mother-of-pearl, agate, coral, amber, pearls and other treasures enter the great sea, and if black winds blow their ships off course to the land of rakshasa demons, if there is even one person who calls the name of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, they will all be saved from the peril of the rakshasas. For this reason he is called Avalokitesvara.”

Long long ago, in a beautiful Buddha-land, there was a bodhisattva named Inexhaustible Intent. One day, a question suddenly arose in his mind, so he stood up and respectfully asked the Buddha:

“World-Honored One, I have always been curious, why does Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara have this name?”

The Buddha smiled and replied: “Good child, let me tell you the story behind this name.”

The Buddha began to explain: “In this world, there are countless beings suffering from various kinds of pain. When they sincerely call out Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s name, the Bodhisattva immediately hears their voices and helps them escape their difficulties.”

“Imagine,” the Buddha continued, “if someone accidentally falls into raging flames, as long as they sincerely call out Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s name, the flames cannot harm them. This is the miraculous power of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara!”

“For example,” the Buddha gave another example, “if someone is unfortunately swept away by floods, if they call out to Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara in their moment of crisis, they will find safe shallow waters.”

The Buddha also said: “Even at sea, if thousands upon thousands of people go out seeking treasures and encounter terrible storms, their ships blown to the man-eating rakshasa demon islands. As long as one person on the ship calls out Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s name, everyone can escape from danger.”

Finally, the Buddha concluded: “It is precisely because Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara can hear the cries of beings and provide help that we call him ‘Avalokitesvara’.”

“Furthermore, if a person who is about to be harmed calls the name of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, the knives and clubs of the attackers will immediately break into pieces, and they will be saved. If throughout the three thousand great thousand world system it is filled with yakshas and rakshasas who wish to harm people, hearing them call the name of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, these evil spirits will not even be able to look at them with evil eyes, much less harm them.” “If a person, whether guilty or not guilty, who is bound in stocks, cuffs and chains calls the name of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, they will all break apart and they will immediately be freed. If throughout the three thousand great thousand world system it is filled with enemies and bandits, and a merchant leader leading many merchants carrying valuable treasures passes through a dangerous road, if one person among them calls out saying: ‘Good men! Do not be afraid, you should all wholeheartedly call upon Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s name. This Bodhisattva bestows fearlessness upon living beings. If you call his name, you shall be freed from these enemies and bandits.’ Hearing this, the merchants all called out together: ‘Namo Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara!’ Because they called his name, they immediately attained liberation.”

The Buddha continued to speak about Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s miraculous powers, his voice filled with compassion and wisdom:

“Imagine,” said the Buddha, “if someone is facing mortal danger, with bad people holding knives or clubs wanting to harm them. At this time, if they sincerely call out Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s name, those weapons will immediately shatter into pieces and cannot harm them.”

“Even in a vast kingdom,” the Buddha continued, “filled with terrible monsters wanting to harm people. But just hearing someone call out Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s name, these monsters wouldn’t dare even look at that person with fierce eyes, let alone harm them.”

The Buddha gave another example: “Sometimes, whether a person is guilty or innocent, they may be imprisoned in chains. If they sincerely call out Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s name, those chains will suddenly break and they will regain their freedom.”

Then, the Buddha told an exciting story: “Imagine a group of merchants carrying precious treasures, about to travel through a dangerous road. This road is filled with bad people. At this time, one wise merchant said to everyone:

‘Friends, don’t be afraid! Let’s sincerely call out Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s name together. The Bodhisattva can give us courage and help us escape danger.’”

“So,” said the Buddha, “all the merchants called out together:

‘Namo Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara!’”

“And thus,” the Buddha smiled and said, “they truly passed through safely and escaped the threat of the bad people.”

“Inexhaustible Intent! The awesome spiritual power of Bodhisattva Mahasattva Avalokitesvara is as mighty as this. If living beings who have much sexual desire constantly think of and reverently respect Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, they will be separated from desire. If those with much anger constantly think of and reverently respect Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, they will be separated from anger. If those with much delusion constantly think of and reverently respect Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, they will be separated from delusion.”

The Buddha continued explaining to Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent about Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s inconceivable powers. His voice was filled with praise and compassion:

“Inexhaustible Intent,” the Buddha said gently, “Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s spiritual powers are so mighty and awe-inspiring.”

Then, the Buddha explained: “In our world, many people are often troubled by various afflictions.”

“For example,” the Buddha illustrated, “some people are always troubled by desires, unable to concentrate on things. However, if they can frequently think of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, sincerely respect the Bodhisattva, gradually, they can break free from these entangling desires.”

“Also,” the Buddha continued, “some people have big tempers, getting angry easily. If they can frequently think of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, sincerely respect the Bodhisattva, their temper will improve and they won’t get angry so easily.”

“And some people,” the Buddha added, “are always confused, not understanding principles clearly. If they can frequently think of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, sincerely respect the Bodhisattva, their minds will become clearer and they will better understand worldly principles.”

The Buddha’s words deeply moved everyone present. They understood that by sincerely believing in and respecting Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, they could receive the Bodhisattva’s protection and help overcome various difficulties and afflictions. This not only filled them with respect for Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara but also gave them confidence in their path of practice.

“Inexhaustible Intent! Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara has such great awesome spiritual powers and brings many benefits, therefore living beings should always keep him in mind. If a woman wishes to have a son and worships and makes offerings to Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, she will give birth to a son blessed with merit and wisdom; if she wishes to have a daughter, she will give birth to a daughter with dignified features and virtuous characteristics, who has planted roots of virtue and is loved and respected by all people. Inexhaustible Intent! Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara has such power. If living beings respectfully bow to and worship Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, their blessings will not be in vain. Therefore all living beings should uphold the name of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara.”

The Buddha continued explaining to Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent about Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s miraculous powers, his voice filled with love and wisdom:

“Inexhaustible Intent,” the Buddha smiled and said, “Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara has such mighty spiritual powers and can help many people. Therefore, everyone should frequently think of the Bodhisattva.”

Then, the Buddha spoke about an interesting topic: “You know? If a lady really wants a son, she only needs to sincerely pray to Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, respectfully make offerings to the Bodhisattva, and she will give birth to a son who is blessed and intelligent!”

“Similarly,” the Buddha continued, “if someone hopes to have a daughter, through worshiping Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, she will give birth to a beautiful and lovely daughter whom everyone loves. This daughter will also have good virtues, making everyone like and respect her.”

The Buddha’s face showed a kind smile as he said: “Inexhaustible Intent, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara truly has such miraculous powers.”

“Therefore,” the Buddha concluded, “if people respectfully worship Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, their sincerity will not be in vain. They will definitely receive benefits.”

Finally, the Buddha solemnly said: “For this reason, I recommend that all people should remember Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s name and frequently recite it. This way, everyone can receive the Bodhisattva’s protection and help.”

Hearing the Buddha’s words, Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent and everyone present were deeply moved by Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s compassion and power. They understood that as long as they sincerely believe in and respect Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, they can receive the Bodhisattva’s help no matter what difficulties they encounter. This filled them with hope and confidence for the future.

“Inexhaustible Intent! If a person upholds the names of as many bodhisattvas as there are sands in sixty-two million Ganges Rivers and throughout their life makes offerings to them of food and drink, clothing, bedding, and medicine, what do you think? Would the merit and virtue of this good man or good woman be great?” Inexhaustible Intent replied: “Very great, World-Honored One!” The Buddha said: “If another person upholds the name of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara and even for just a moment makes offerings and worships, the blessings of these two people will be exactly equal and will not be exhausted even after hundreds of thousands of millions of eons. Inexhaustible Intent! Upholding the name of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara brings such immeasurable and boundless blessings and benefits.”

The Buddha continued explaining to Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent, this time using an interesting metaphor to illustrate Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s inconceivable power:

“Inexhaustible Intent,” the Buddha said, “imagine if someone remembered the names of as many bodhisattvas as there are grains of sand in sixty-two million Ganges Rivers, and throughout their life made offerings to them of delicious food, beautiful clothes, comfortable bedding, and various medicines. What do you think, how much merit would this person accumulate?”

Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent thought for a moment and exclaimed: “Wow! World-Honored One, that would surely be an enormous amount of merit!”

The Buddha nodded with a smile and then said: “But you know what? If another person just remembers Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s name, and even just briefly worships and makes offerings to the Bodhisattva, can you guess what?”

“The blessings these two people receive are exactly the same!” the Buddha said, “Moreover, these blessings are so vast that even after countless years, they cannot be exhausted!”

The Buddha’s eyes shone with wisdom as he concluded: “Inexhaustible Intent, you see, just sincerely remembering and reciting Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s name brings unimaginable great blessings. These blessings are so vast they cannot be described in words!”

Hearing this, Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent and everyone present were amazed. They finally understood how miraculous and precious Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s name was. From that day on, everyone more devoutly recited Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s name, hoping to receive the Bodhisattva’s protection and endless blessings.

“Inexhaustible Intent Bodhisattva said to the Buddha, ‘World-Honored One, how does Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara roam in this Saha world? How does he teach the Dharma to living beings? What is the scope of his skillful means?’”

After hearing the Buddha’s explanation, Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent had new questions arise in his mind. He respectfully asked the Buddha:

“World-Honored One,” Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent said, “we now know how miraculous and compassionate Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara is. But I have a few more questions I’d like to ask you.”

The Buddha kindly looked at Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent, encouraging him to continue.

Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent took a deep breath and then asked: “How does Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara move about in our world full of suffering?”

“Also,” he continued asking, “how does the Bodhisattva explain the Dharma to living beings?”

Finally, Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent asked his most curious question: “What special methods does Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara use to help living beings? Could you tell us more details?”

The Buddha told Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent, “Good man: If living beings in any land need to be saved by means of a Buddha’s body, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara manifests in a Buddha’s body and expounds the Dharma to them.”

The Buddha, having heard Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent’s questions, showed a kind smile. He began to answer slowly, his voice gentle yet firm:

“Good child,” the Buddha said, “let me tell you how Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara helps living beings.”

The Buddha’s eyes shone with wisdom as he explained: “In this world, there are some places where people are particularly moved by the image of a Buddha. What does Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara do for these people?”

The Buddha paused for a moment, then said: “The Bodhisattva miraculously transforms into the appearance of a Buddha to appear before them!”

“Thus,” the Buddha continued, “Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, in the form of a Buddha, explains the principles of the Dharma to these people. Because people see the familiar and respected form of the Buddha, they more easily understand and accept these teachings.”

Hearing this, Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent and everyone present were amazed. They finally understood how deep and unfathomable Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s compassion and wisdom were. The Bodhisattva could transform into different forms, all for the sake of helping beings better understand the Dharma!

If living beings need to be saved by means of a Pratyekabuddha’s body, he manifests in a Pratyekabuddha’s body and expounds the Dharma to them. If living beings need to be saved by means of a Sravaka’s body, he manifests in a Sravaka’s body and expounds the Dharma to them. If living beings need to be saved by means of a Brahma King’s body, he manifests in a Brahma King’s body and expounds the Dharma to them.

The Buddha, seeing everyone’s amazed expressions, continued to explain kindly:

“Children, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s spiritual powers are not limited to just this,” the Buddha said with a smile.

“Some people,” the Buddha explained, “particularly admire the Pratyekabuddhas who practice and attain enlightenment alone. What does Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara do for these people?”

The Buddha paused for a moment, then said: “The Bodhisattva transforms into the appearance of a Pratyekabuddha to explain the Dharma to them. This way, these people can more easily understand and accept the teachings.”

“There are also some people,” the Buddha continued, “who particularly resonate with the Buddha’s disciples - those Sravakas who attained enlightenment through hearing the Dharma. For these people, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara manifests in the form of a Sravaka to teach them.”

The Buddha’s eyes shone with wisdom as he said: “And some people particularly worship the Great Brahma King of the heavenly realm. Can you guess what Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara does?”

“That’s right,” the Buddha said with a smile, “the Bodhisattva manifests in the majestic form of a Brahma King to explain the principles of the Dharma to these people.”

If living beings need to be saved by means of an Indra’s body, he manifests in an Indra’s body and expounds the Dharma to them. If living beings need to be saved by means of an Isvara’s body, he manifests in an Isvara’s body and expounds the Dharma to them. If living beings need to be saved by means of a Mahesvara’s body, he manifests in a Mahesvara’s body and expounds the Dharma to them.

The Buddha, seeing the wonder and admiration in everyone’s eyes, continued to explain kindly:

“Children, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s spiritual transformations are far from limited to just these,” the Buddha said with a smile.

“In our world,” the Buddha explained, “some people particularly worship Indra, the King of Gods. For these people, can you guess what Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara does?”

The Buddha paused for a moment, then said: “That’s right, the Bodhisattva transforms into the majestic appearance of Lord Indra to explain the principles of the Dharma to them.”

“There are also some people,” the Buddha continued, “who particularly resonate with Isvara. This deity can transform at will, making many people admire him greatly. For these people, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara manifests as Isvara, using this familiar form to teach them.”

The Buddha’s eyes shone with wisdom as he said: “And some people particularly worship Mahesvara - that even more powerful deity. Can you guess what Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara does?”

“Yes,” the Buddha said with a smile, “the Bodhisattva manifests in the majestic form of Mahesvara to explain the mysteries of the Dharma to these people.”

If living beings need to be saved by means of a celestial great general’s body, he manifests in a celestial great general’s body and expounds the Dharma to them. If living beings need to be saved by means of Vaisravana’s body, he manifests in Vaisravana’s body and expounds the Dharma to them. If living beings need to be saved by means of a minor king’s body, he manifests in a minor king’s body and expounds the Dharma to them.

The Buddha, seeing the amazed expressions on everyone’s faces, continued to kindly explain Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s miraculous transformations:

“Children, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara has many more manifestations,” the Buddha said gently.

“In the heavenly realm,” the Buddha explained, “there are mighty celestial armies and generals. Some people particularly worship these celestial great generals. Can you guess what Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara does?”

The Buddha smiled and said: “That’s right, the Bodhisattva manifests as a mighty celestial general to explain the Dharma using this form.”

“There is also a famous deity,” the Buddha continued, “called Vaisravana. He is the Guardian King of the North, and many people revere him. For these people, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara manifests in the form of Vaisravana to teach them the Dharma.”

The Buddha’s eyes shone with wisdom as he said: “In our human realm, some people particularly respect local kings or lords. Can you guess what Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara does?”

“That’s right,” the Buddha said with a smile, “the Bodhisattva manifests in the majestic form of a king or lord to explain the principles of the Dharma using their familiar appearance.”

If living beings need to be saved by means of an elder’s body, he manifests in an elder’s body and expounds the Dharma to them. If living beings need to be saved by means of a householder’s body, he manifests in a householder’s body and expounds the Dharma to them. If living beings need to be saved by means of a state official’s body, he manifests in a state official’s body and expounds the Dharma to them.

The Buddha, seeing the wonder and admiration on everyone’s faces, continued to kindly explain Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s miraculous transformations:

“Children, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara has many more manifestations,” the Buddha said gently. “Let us see how the Bodhisattva helps different people in our human society.”

“In our towns,” the Buddha explained, “there are respected elders who are advanced in age and rich in experience, highly respected by others. Some people particularly wish to hear teachings from these elders. Can you guess what Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara does?”

The Buddha smiled and said: “Yes, the Bodhisattva manifests as a kind elder to explain the Dharma using this form.”

“There are also some people,” the Buddha continued, “who particularly respect wealthy householders who are not attached to fame and fortune. For these people, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara manifests in the form of a householder to teach them the Dharma.”

The Buddha’s eyes shone with wisdom as he said: “In the imperial court, some people particularly respect upright officials. Can you guess what Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara does?”

“That’s right,” the Buddha said with a smile, “the Bodhisattva manifests as an upright official to explain the principles of the Dharma using their familiar form.”

Hearing this, Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent and everyone present were amazed. They finally understood how detailed and subtle Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s compassion and wisdom were. Whether it was respected elders, charitable householders, or upright officials, the Bodhisattva could manifest in their forms to teach beings in the most suitable way.

If living beings need to be saved by means of a Brahman’s body, he manifests in a Brahman’s body and expounds the Dharma to them. If living beings need to be saved by means of a bhiksu, bhiksuni, upasaka, or upasika’s body, he manifests as a bhiksu, bhiksuni, upasaka, or upasika and expounds the Dharma to them. If living beings need to be saved by means of the wife of an elder, householder, state official, or Brahman, he manifests in a female form and expounds the Dharma to them.

The Buddha, seeing understanding and admiration sparkling in everyone’s eyes, continued to kindly explain Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s miraculous transformations:

“Children, there is still more to learn from Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s compassion and wisdom,” the Buddha said gently.

“In India,” the Buddha explained, “there is a group called Brahmans who specialize in studying ancient scriptures. Some people particularly respect these Brahmans. Can you guess what Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara does?”

The Buddha smiled and said: “That’s right, the Bodhisattva manifests as a learned Brahman to explain the Dharma using this form.”

“In our Buddhist community,” the Buddha continued, “there are ordained bhiksus and bhiksunis, as well as lay practitioners called upasakas and upasikas. For these people, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara manifests as one of them to teach them deeper Buddhist teachings.”

The Buddha’s eyes shone with wisdom as he said: “Sometimes, women are more receptive to teachings from other women. Can you guess what Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara does?”

“Yes,” the Buddha said with a smile, “whether it’s the wife of an elder, householder, official, or Brahman, whenever women are more receptive, the Bodhisattva manifests in female form to explain the principles of the Dharma using their familiar appearance.”

Hearing this, Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent and everyone present were amazed. They finally understood how thorough and detailed Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s compassion and wisdom were. Whether it was learned Brahmans, devoted Buddhists, or women of various backgrounds, the Bodhisattva could manifest in their forms to teach beings in the most suitable way.

If living beings need to be saved by means of a young boy’s or young girl’s body, he manifests as a young boy or young girl and expounds the Dharma to them. If living beings need to be saved by means of a deity, dragon, yaksa, gandharva, asura, garuda, kinnara, mahoraga, human or non-human being, he manifests in all these forms and expounds the Dharma to them. If living beings need to be saved by means of a Vajra spirit, he manifests as a Vajra spirit and expounds the Dharma to them.

The Buddha, seeing wonder and admiration on everyone’s faces, continued to gently explain Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s miraculous transformations:

“Children, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s compassion truly encompasses all,” the Buddha said kindly.

“Sometimes,” the Buddha explained, “children are more receptive to words from other children. Can you guess what Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara does?”

The Buddha smiled and said: “That’s right, the Bodhisattva manifests as a lovely young boy or girl to explain the Dharma in ways they can understand.”

“In our world,” the Buddha continued, “there are many magical beings. Such as deities, dragons, yaksas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, and some beings we normally cannot see. For these beings, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara manifests as one of them to teach them the Dharma.”

The Buddha’s eyes shone with wisdom as he said: “There is a particularly powerful type of spirit called the Vajra spirit. They are mighty and protect the Dharma. Some people particularly worship them. Can you guess what Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara does?”

“Yes,” the Buddha said with a smile, “the Bodhisattva manifests as a mighty Vajra spirit to explain the principles of the Dharma using their familiar form.”

Hearing this, Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent and everyone present were amazed. They finally understood how vast and boundless Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s compassion and wisdom were. Whether it was innocent children, magical beings, or mighty protective spirits, the Bodhisattva could manifest in their forms to teach them in the most suitable way.

“Inexhaustible Intent! Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara has perfected such meritorious virtues as these and, taking on all different kinds of forms, travels throughout the lands to save and liberate living beings. For this reason you and the others should single-mindedly make offerings to Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. In fearful and urgent situations, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara can bestow fearlessness. That is why in this Saha world everyone calls him the Bestower of Fearlessness.”

At this point, the Buddha’s face was filled with loving kindness and praise. Looking at Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent and everyone present, he gently concluded:

“Inexhaustible Intent, see how Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara has such inconceivable spiritual powers and merit,” the Buddha said kindly. “The Bodhisattva can transform into various different forms, traveling through all lands to help and save countless beings.”

The Buddha’s voice became more solemn: “Because Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara is so great, you should all make offerings and respect him with your whole heart.”

Then, the Buddha explained: “Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara has another special ability. When beings encounter frightening dangers or find themselves in urgent difficulties, the Bodhisattva can give them fearless strength, making them no longer afraid.”

The Buddha smiled and said: “For this reason, in our world full of suffering, everyone calls Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara the ‘Bestower of Fearlessness’ - meaning one who can give people courage and a sense of security.”

Hearing the Buddha’s words, Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent and everyone present were deeply moved by Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s great compassion. They understood that no matter who they were or what difficulties they encountered, if they sincerely called upon Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s name, they would receive the Bodhisattva’s protection and help.

“Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent said to the Buddha: ‘World-Honored One! I now wish to make an offering to Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara.’ He then removed the precious necklace of pearls from his neck, worth hundreds of thousands of ounces of gold, and presented it saying: ‘Sir, please accept this offering of the Dharma, this precious necklace.’ At that time Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara was unwilling to accept it. Inexhaustible Intent once again said to Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara: ‘Sir, out of compassion for us, please accept this necklace.’ Then the Buddha said to Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara: ‘You should have pity on this Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent and the four kinds of believers, and on the heavenly beings, dragons, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kimnaras, mahoragas, human and non-human beings, and accept this necklace.’”

After the Buddha finished speaking about Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s spiritual powers and compassion, Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent was deeply moved and decided to express his respect. We witness a touching scene:

Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent stood up and respectfully said to the Buddha: “World-Honored One, I wish to make an offering to Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara.”

After speaking, he removed the jeweled necklace from his neck. This necklace was very precious, worth hundreds of thousands of ounces of gold. Inexhaustible Intent held the necklace in his hands, turned to Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, and sincerely said: “Respected Bodhisattva, please accept this precious necklace as a Dharma offering.”

However, unexpectedly, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara did not accept this gift.

Inexhaustible Intent became somewhat anxious and pleaded again: “Respected Bodhisattva, please be compassionate and accept this necklace.”

At this time, the Buddha spoke, saying to Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara: “Avalokitesvara, you should have pity on Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent’s intention. Not only that, but also for the sake of the four groups of disciples present, as well as the heavenly beings, dragons, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kimnaras, mahoragas, and all other beings. Please accept this necklace.”

This scene shows us Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent’s sincerity and generosity, and also Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s humility. More importantly, we understand the Buddha’s wisdom - he reminded Avalokitesvara that accepting offerings is not just for oneself, but for the benefit of all beings. This story teaches us that true compassion and wisdom must consider the benefit of all beings.

“Then Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, having compassion for the four kinds of believers and for the heavenly beings, dragons, human and non-human beings and the others, accepted the necklace and divided it into two parts. One part he offered to Shakyamuni Buddha and the other to the stupa of the Buddha Many Treasures. Inexhaustible Intent, such is the supernatural power and freedom of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara that he roams at will in the Saha world.”

After hearing the Buddha’s words, compassionate light shone in Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s eyes. At this moment, a moving scene unfolded before everyone:

Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara smiled gently, looking lovingly at Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent and all present. He gently accepted the precious necklace, and everyone felt the Bodhisattva’s great compassion.

Then, Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara did something that amazed everyone. He carefully divided the necklace into two parts.

“Look,” the Buddha explained, “Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara offered half of the necklace to me - Shakyamuni Buddha.”

“And the other half,” the Buddha continued, “the Bodhisattva offered to the stupa of Buddha Many Treasures.”

The Buddha looked at Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent and kindly said: “Inexhaustible Intent, do you see? Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara has such miraculous powers and wisdom. He freely helps beings in this world of suffering while not forgetting to respect all Buddhas.”

At that time Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent posed this question in verse form:

After the Buddha finished telling the story of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent still had some questions. He decided to express his curiosity through beautiful poetry. We witness a scene full of wisdom and beauty:

Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent stood up and respectfully faced the Buddha. He took a deep breath, then began to chant in a melodious voice:

World-Honored One, complete with wonderful features, I now ask you once again, for what reason is this Buddha’s disciple named Avalokitesvara? The Honored One endowed with wonderful features replied to Inexhaustible Intent in verse: Listen to the actions of Avalokitesvara, who skillfully responds in all quarters.

In that beautiful Buddha-land, a dialogue full of wisdom was taking place. Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent still had questions, so he asked the Buddha through beautiful poetry:

“Respected World-Honored One, you possess the most wonderful features, today I wish to ask you another question. Why is this disciple of the Buddha called ‘Avalokitesvara’?”

Hearing this, the Buddha smiled kindly. He knew this question was not only Bodhisattva Inexhaustible Intent’s doubt, but also the curiosity in everyone’s hearts. So the Buddha also replied in verse:

“Inexhaustible Intent who possesses perfect features, let me answer your question in verse. Listen carefully to the deeds of Avalokitesvara, how he manifests everywhere to help beings.”

His vast vows are deep as the ocean, through countless kalpas beyond reckoning. He has served many thousands of millions of Buddhas, making great pure vows. I will tell you briefly: hearing his name or seeing his body, with mindful remembrance is not in vain, for it can eliminate all suffering.

The Buddha continued in his voice full of wisdom and compassion:

“Avalokitesvara’s vows are as deep as the ocean, unchanging through countless kalpas of time. These vows are inconceivable, beyond our understanding.

He has served billions of Buddhas, and during his long practice, made the most noble and pure vows to help all suffering beings.

Let me tell you simply, just hearing Avalokitesvara’s name, or seeing the Bodhisattva’s form, sincere prayers will surely receive a response.

If you sincerely call upon Avalokitesvara, your prayers will not be in vain. The Bodhisattva’s compassionate power is boundless and can eliminate all suffering in the world.”

Suppose someone should conceive a wish to harm you, should push you into a great pit of fire. Think on Avalokitesvara’s power and the pit of fire will change into a pond. Or if you should be cast adrift on the vast ocean, menaced by dragons, fish and various demons, think on Avalokitesvara’s power and the waves cannot drown you.

The Buddha’s voice continued, full of warmth and power:

“Imagine if someone wanted to harm you by pushing you into a blazing pit of fire. But if you sincerely recite Avalokitesvara’s name, a miracle will happen - the fire pit will transform into a cool pond.

Or suppose you encounter danger at sea, surrounded by fearsome dragons, fish and water demons. If you concentrate on calling Avalokitesvara’s name, the huge waves cannot submerge you.”

If you should be on the peak of Mount Sumeru and someone pushes you off, think on Avalokitesvara’s power and you will hang in midair like the sun. Or if you are pursued by evil men who wish to throw you down from a diamond mountain, think on Avalokitesvara’s power and they cannot harm a single hair.

The Buddha continued in his gentle yet powerful voice:

“Imagine you are standing on the cloud-piercing peak of Mount Sumeru and someone tries to push you off. But if you sincerely call upon Avalokitesvara, you will hang steadily in the air like the sun.

Or suppose evil men are chasing you and you accidentally fall from a mountain as hard as diamond. If you concentrate on reciting Avalokitesvara’s name, not even a single hair will be harmed.”

Or if you are surrounded by evil bandits, each brandishing a knife to wound you, think on Avalokitesvara’s power and they will be moved to compassion. Or if you encounter trouble with the king’s law, about to be punished by execution, think on Avalokitesvara’s power and the executioner’s sword will be broken to bits.

The Buddha’s voice continued, gentle yet firm:

“Imagine you are surrounded by evil men holding sharp knives, wanting to harm you. But if you sincerely call upon Avalokitesvara, a miracle will happen - these people will suddenly become friendly.

Or suppose you are wrongly imprisoned and about to be executed, your life hanging by a thread. If you concentrate on reciting Avalokitesvara’s name, the execution sword will suddenly break into pieces.”

Or if imprisoned in cangue and lock, hands and feet bound by fetters, think on Avalokitesvara’s power and they will fall off, leaving you free. Spells and various poisons intended to injure you, through the power of Avalokitesvara will rebound upon those who sent them.

The Buddha continued in his gentle yet powerful voice:

“Imagine you are locked in prison, hands and feet bound by heavy chains. But if you sincerely call upon Avalokitesvara, a miracle will happen - the chains will loosen by themselves, setting you free.

Or suppose someone uses curses or poison, wanting to harm your body. If you concentrate on reciting Avalokitesvara’s name, these harms will bounce back and harm the person who tried to hurt you.”

If you encounter evil rakshasas, poisonous dragons and various ghosts, think on Avalokitesvara’s power and they will not dare to harm you. If surrounded by fierce beasts with sharp fangs and fearsome claws, think on Avalokitesvara’s power and they will quickly flee in all directions.

The Buddha’s voice continued, full of warmth and power:

“Imagine you encounter fearsome rakshasas on your journey, or poisonous dragons and other terrifying demons. But if you sincerely call upon Avalokitesvara, these frightening creatures will lose their courage to harm you.

For example, if you are surrounded by fierce beasts, they open their bloody mouths and show their sharp claws. If you concentrate on reciting Avalokitesvara’s name, these beasts will quickly flee and disappear without a trace.”

Vipers and scorpions with burning poisonous vapors like fire, think on Avalokitesvara’s power and at the sound they will turn back. Clouds, thunder, lightning and thunderbolts, hail falling and great rain, think on Avalokitesvara’s power and they will immediately disperse.

The Buddha’s voice continued, gentle yet firm:

“Imagine you encounter poisonous snakes and scorpions, spewing toxic vapors, dangerous like fire. But if you sincerely call upon Avalokitesvara, these frightening creatures will turn away by themselves.

For example, when the sky is covered with dark clouds, thunder roars, lightning flashes, and hail and heavy rain pour down. If you concentrate on reciting Avalokitesvara’s name, this terrible weather will immediately disperse.”

Living beings are beset by troubles, countless sufferings oppress their bodies. Avalokitesvara’s wondrous wisdom power can save the world’s suffering. Perfectly endowed with supernatural powers, broadly cultivating wisdom and expedient means. In all lands of the ten directions, there is no realm where he does not manifest.

The Buddha’s voice became gentler, full of compassion:

“Children, many people in the world are experiencing difficulties, tormented by countless sufferings. However, Avalokitesvara possesses miraculous wisdom power that can save all the world’s suffering.”

The Buddha paused, looking around to ensure everyone was listening carefully. Then he continued: “Avalokitesvara is endowed with perfect supernatural powers, using various skillful methods to help beings. Wherever in the ten directions of the world someone needs help, Avalokitesvara will manifest to assist them.”

The various evil destinies - hell beings, hungry ghosts, and animals. The sufferings of birth, old age, sickness and death, gradually he causes them all to be eliminated. True contemplation, pure contemplation, contemplation of vast wisdom. Compassionate contemplation and kind contemplation, ever wished for, ever looked up to.

The Buddha’s eyes shone with wisdom as he continued:

“Children, in this world there are many painful circumstances. Some fall into hell, some become hungry ghosts, some become animals. Even as humans, we must face the sufferings of birth, old age, sickness and death.”

The Buddha’s voice became gentler: “But Avalokitesvara’s power is so great, she can gradually eliminate these sufferings and liberate all beings.”

He paused to let everyone understand the deep meaning of these words, then continued: “Avalokitesvara’s contemplation is pure and true, her wisdom as deep and vast as the ocean. Her gaze is filled with compassion and love, forever watching over each one of us.”

Pure undefiled light, wisdom sun breaking through all darkness. Able to subdue disasters of wind and fire, universally illuminating the world. Body of compassion shaking like thunder, kind intention like wonderful great clouds. Raining down sweet dharma rain, extinguishing the flames of affliction.

The Buddha’s voice became more inspiring as he continued: “Children, Avalokitesvara is like a pure and flawless light. Her wisdom is like the sun, able to dispel all darkness.”

The Buddha smiled, using vivid metaphors to describe Avalokitesvara’s power: “Imagine when disasters like storms and flames strike, Avalokitesvara’s power can calm these dangers. Her light illuminates the whole world, bringing hope to every corner.”

His voice suddenly became deep, as if imitating thunder: “Avalokitesvara’s compassion shakes hearts like thunder, her kindness is like a great auspicious cloud.”

Then, the Buddha’s tone became gentle again: “From this cloud, Avalokitesvara sprinkles sweet dharma rain. This dharma rain can extinguish the fires of affliction in our hearts, bringing coolness and peace to our minds.”

In lawsuits and disputes before officials, in fearsome army formations, think on Avalokitesvara’s power and all enemies will scatter. Wonderful sound Avalokitesvara, Brahma’s sound, sound of the sea tide. Surpassing all worldly sounds, therefore should be constantly mindful.

The Buddha’s gaze swept across the assembly as he continued in a gentle yet firm voice: “Children, in life we inevitably encounter some frightening situations. For example, when you are involved in litigation, standing in court, or on the battlefield surrounded by enemies.”

The Buddha paused to let these words sink into the listeners’ hearts, then smiled and said: “But if you sincerely call upon Avalokitesvara in your heart, wonderful things will happen. Those who oppose you will disperse like the ebbing tide.”

His voice became gentler, as if painting a beautiful picture: “Avalokitesvara’s voice is so wonderful, like the Brahma sound of heaven, like the rhythm of ocean tides. This sound transcends all worldly sounds, reaching directly into people’s hearts, comforting every soul.”

The Buddha looked around, seeing the audience listening intently. He said earnestly: “Because Avalokitesvara is so inconceivable, we should constantly recite her name. This way, no matter what difficulties we encounter, we can receive her protection and guidance.”

Thought after thought free from doubt, pure sage Avalokitesvara. In times of suffering, distress and death’s peril, can provide protection and refuge. Complete with all merits, compassionate eyes viewing living beings. Ocean of blessings immeasurable, therefore should reverently bow.

The Buddha’s eyes shone with wisdom, his voice becoming more firm yet warm: “Children, when you recite Avalokitesvara’s name, do not have the slightest doubt in your heart. Avalokitesvara is a pure and holy great bodhisattva, her power is beyond doubt.”

The Buddha sighed gently, his voice full of sympathy and understanding: “In this world, we inevitably encounter suffering, distress, and even face the threat of death. But remember, Avalokitesvara is always there, becoming our solid support and protection.”

A kind smile spread across his face: “Avalokitesvara possesses all good virtues. She watches over every life with compassionate eyes, like a mother gazing at her child. Her accumulated merit is like a vast ocean, unfathomable.”

The Buddha looked around, seeing expressions of awe and emotion on the listeners’ faces. He slowly said: “Because Avalokitesvara is so great, we should bow to her in reverence, expressing our most sincere respect and gratitude.”

At that time, Earth-Holder Bodhisattva rose from his seat and said to the Buddha: “World-Honored One! If living beings hear this chapter on Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, the sovereign deeds of the universal gateway manifesting supernatural powers, know that these people’s merit is not small.” When the Buddha spoke this Universal Gateway Chapter, eighty-four thousand beings in the assembly all aroused the unequalled anuttara-samyak-sambodhi mind.

At this time, a bodhisattva named Earth-Holder stood up from his seat. He respectfully walked before the Buddha, joined his palms and said: “Respected World-Honored One, if someone can hear your teaching of the Avalokitesvara Chapter, understanding the bodhisattva’s sovereign deeds and the supernatural powers of her universal manifestation, this person will surely gain immeasurable merit.”

The Buddha heard Earth-Holder Bodhisattva’s words and nodded with satisfaction. He looked around at everyone present and said gently yet firmly: “As Earth-Holder Bodhisattva says, hearing Avalokitesvara’s merits indeed brings great benefits.”

Suddenly, a wonderful energy wave spread throughout the assembly. The Buddha smiled and announced: “While I was teaching this Universal Gateway Chapter, eighty-four thousand beings in the assembly have aroused the mind of supreme perfect enlightenment. This means they have vowed to become enlightened ones like Avalokitesvara, helping more people escape from suffering.”

Hearing this news, everyone in the assembly was overjoyed. Some wept with joy, some stood up cheering with excitement. The whole scene was filled with an atmosphere of joy and gratitude. Everyone deeply realized that listening to the Buddha teach about Avalokitesvara’s merits not only gave them wisdom but also planted the seed of Buddhahood in their hearts.

The Buddha looked kindly at everyone, knowing this teaching had achieved the best effect. He prepared to bring this auspicious dharma assembly to a perfect conclusion, while also looking forward to more people understanding and drawing close to the greatly compassionate Avalokitesvara.
