Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was in the Iand of Shravasti, in the garden of Jeta and Anathapindika. He was accompanied by a gathering of great Bhikshus, twelve hundred fifty in all, all of them great Arhats, known to members of the assembly. Among them were the Elders Shariputra, Mahamaudgalyayana, Mahakashyapa, Mahakatyayana, Mahakausthila, Revata, Suddhipanthaka, Nanda, Ananda, Rahula, Gavampati, Pindola-bharadvaja, Kalodayin, Mahakapphina, Vakkula, and Aniruddha, and other such great disciples. Also present were great Bodhisattvas: Manjushri, Prince of Dharma; Ajita Bodhisattva; Gandhahastin Bodhisattva; Nityodyukta Bodhisattva; and other such great Bodhisattvas. Also present was Shakra, King of the Gods, and countless others from the multitudes of heavens.
At that time, the Buddha told the Elder Shariputra: “Passing from here to the west, beyond ten trillion Buddha-lands, there is a world called ‘Ultimate Bliss’ (Sukhavati). In this land, there is a Buddha named Amitabha, who is expounding the Dharma right now. Shariputra, why is that land called ‘Ultimate Bliss’? Because the beings in that land suffer no pain but only enjoy every bliss; therefore, it is called ‘Ultimate Bliss’.
Moreover, Shariputra, this Land of Ultimate Bliss is everywhere surrounded by seven tiers of railings, seven layers of netting, and seven rows of trees, all formed from the four treasures. For this reason, that land is called ‘Ultimate Bliss’.
Moreover, Shariputra, the Land of Ultimate Bliss has pools of the seven jewels, filled with the waters of eight virtues. The bottom of each pool is pure, covered with golden sand. On the four sides are walkways composed of gold, silver, lapis lazuli, and crystal. Above are pavilions adorned with gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, mother-of-pearl, red pearls, and agate. In the pools are lotus flowers as large as carriage wheels: blue ones with a blue light, yellow ones with a yellow light, red ones with a red light, and white ones with a white light, each subtle, fragrant, and pure. Shariputra, the Land of Ultimate Bliss is complete with such a merit and adornment!
Moreover, Shariputra, in that Buddha-land, heavenly music plays continually. The ground is made of yellow gold. Six times each day and night, Mandarava flowers rain down from the sky. In the clear morning, beings of that land each offering their sacks filled with myriads of wonderful flowers, make offerings to the hundred billion Buddhas of other directions. At mealtime, they return to their own country, and after eating, they walk about. Shariputra, the Land of Ultimate Bliss is complete with such a merit and adornment!
Furthermore, Shariputra, in this land, there are birds of all sorts of wondrous, variegated colors: white cranes, peacocks, parrots, egrets, kalavinkas, and two-headed birds. All these birds, six times each day and night, sing forth harmonious and elegant sounds. Their clear and distinct sounds proclaim the Five Roots, the Five Powers, the Seven Bodhi Shares, the Eightfold Noble Path, and dharmas such as these. When beings of this land hear these sounds, they are altogether mindful of the Buddha, mindful of the Dharma, and mindful of the Sangha.
Shariputra, do not say that these birds are born as retribution for their sin. Why? In this Buddha-land, there are no three evil ways. Shariputra, in this Buddha-land, not even the names of the evil ways exist, how much less their actual existence? These multitudes of birds are all created by Amitabha Buddha, who wishes for the Dharma sound to be proclaimed far and wide. Shariputra, in that Buddha-land, when a soft breeze blows, the rows of jewel trees and jewel nets give forth subtle and wonderful sounds, like a hundred thousand kinds of music played at the same time. All those who hear these sounds naturally bring forth in their hearts mindfulness of the Buddha, mindfulness of the Dharma, and mindfulness of the Sangha. Shariputra, the Land of Ultimate Bliss is complete with such a merit and adornment!
Shariputra, what do you think? Why is this Buddha called Amitabha? Shariputra, the radiance of that Buddha is infinite, illuminating the lands of the ten directions without obstruction; therefore, he is called Amitabha. Moreover, Shariputra, the lifespan of that Buddha and his people is countless, limitless assankhya kalpas; therefore, he is called Amitayus (Amitabha). Shariputra, Amitabha Buddha attained enlightenment ten kalpas ago. Moreover, Shariputra, that Buddha has countless, limitless voice-hearer disciples, all Arhats, their number incalculable. So too are the assemblies of Bodhisattvas. Shariputra, that Buddha-land is complete with such a merit and adornment!
Moreover, Shariputra, the beings born in the Land of Ultimate Bliss are all Avaivartika. Among them are many who in this very life will dwell in the Stage of Succession (Ekajatipratibuddha). Their number is extremely many; it is not something calculation can know, but can only be spoken of in terms of limitless, boundless Asamkhyas. Shariputra, sentient beings who hear this should make a vow, desiring to be born in that land. Why? Because they will be able to gather in one place with all these beings of superior goodness. Shariputra, one cannot be born in that land with few good roots, blessings, virtues, and causal connections.
Shariputra, if a good man or a good woman hears of Amitabha Buddha and holds fast to his name, for one day, or two days, or three days, or four days, or five days, or six days, or seven days, with a mind that is single and unconfused, then when this person’s life is about to end, Amitabha Buddha, along with the assembly of holy ones, will appear before him. At the time of death, his mind will not be upside down, and he will attain rebirth in Amitabha Buddha’s Land of Ultimate Bliss. Shariputra, seeing these benefits, I speak these words: If sentient beings hear this, they should make a vow to be born in that land.
Shariputra, just as I now praise the inconceivable benefit of Amitabha Buddha’s merit, so too in the East are Akshobhya Buddha, Sumeru Marks Buddha, Great Sumeru Buddha, Sumeru Light Buddha, Wondrous Sound Buddha, and Buddhas such as these, numberless as Ganges sands. Each in his own country extends his broad and long tongue, covering the three thousand great thousand worlds, and speaks these sincere words: ‘All you sentient beings should believe in this sutra which praises inconceivable merit and which is protected and kept in mind by all Buddhas.’
Shariputra, in the Southern world are Sun Moon Lamp Buddha, Well-Known Light Buddha, Great Blazing Shoulders Buddha, Sumeru Lamp Buddha, Infinite Vigor Buddha, and Buddhas such as these, numberless as Ganges sands. Each in his own country extends his broad and long tongue, covering the three thousand great thousand worlds, and speaks these sincere words: ‘All you sentient beings should believe in this sutra which praises inconceivable merit and which is protected and kept in mind by all Buddhas.’
Shariputra, in the Western world are Amitayus Buddha, Infinite Marks Buddha, Infinite Banners Buddha, Great Light Buddha, Great Brightness Buddha, Jewel Marks Buddha, Pure Light Buddha, and Buddhas such as these, numberless as Ganges sands. Each in his own country extends his broad and long tongue, covering the three thousand great thousand worlds, and speaks these sincere words: ‘All you sentient beings should believe in this sutra which praises inconceivable merit and which is protected and kept in mind by all Buddhas.’
Shariputra, in the Northern world are Blazing Shoulders Buddha, Most Victorious Sound Buddha, Hard to Injure Buddha, Sun Birth Buddha, Net Brightness Buddha, and Buddhas such as these, numberless as Ganges sands. Each in his own country extends his broad and long tongue, covering the three thousand great thousand worlds, and speaks these sincere words: ‘All you sentient beings should believe in this sutra which praises inconceivable merit and which is protected and kept in mind by all Buddhas.’
Shariputra, in the World Below are Lion Buddha, Well-Known Buddha, Famous Light Buddha, Dharma Buddha, Dharma Banner Buddha, Dharma Holding Buddha, and Buddhas such as these, numberless as Ganges sands. Each in his own country extends his broad and long tongue, covering the three thousand great thousand worlds, and speaks these sincere words: ‘All you sentient beings should believe in this sutra which praises inconceivable merit and which is protected and kept in mind by all Buddhas.’
Shariputra, in the World Above are Brahma Voice Buddha, Constellation King Buddha, Superior Fragrance Buddha, Fragrant Light Buddha, Great Blazing Shoulders Buddha, Variegated Jewel Flower Adornment Body Buddha, Sala Tree King Buddha, Jewel Flower Virtue Buddha, Vision of All Meaning Buddha, Such as Mount Sumeru Buddha, and Buddhas such as these, numberless as Ganges sands. Each in his own country extends his broad and long tongue, covering the three thousand great thousand worlds, and speaks these sincere words: ‘All you sentient beings should believe in this sutra which praises inconceivable merit and which is protected and kept in mind by all Buddhas.’
Shariputra, what do you think? Why is it called the ‘Sutra Protected and Kept in Mind by All Buddhas’? Shariputra, if good men or good women hear this sutra and accept and uphold it, and hear the names of the Buddhas, then all these good men and good women will be protected and kept in mind by all Buddhas, and will all attain non-retrogression in Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi. Therefore, Shariputra, all of you should believe and accept my words and what all the Buddhas speak.
Shariputra, if there are people who have already made a vow, are now making a vow, or will make a vow, desiring to be born in the land of Amitabha Buddha, then all these people will attain non-retrogression in Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi, whether they have already been born, are now being born, or will be born in that land. Therefore, Shariputra, all good men and good women who have faith should make a vow to be born in that land.
Shariputra, just as I now praise the inconceivable merit of all the Buddhas, so too do those Buddhas praise my inconceivable merit, saying these words: ‘Shakyamuni Buddha is able to do extremely difficult and rare deeds. In the Saha Land, in the Evil World of the Five Turbidities—the turbidity of the kalpa, the turbidity of views, the turbidity of afflictions, the turbidity of sentient beings, and the turbidity of life—he is able to attain Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi and for the sake of all sentient beings, speak this Dharma which is difficult for the whole world to believe.’
Shariputra, you should know that I, in the Evil World of the Five Turbidities, did this difficult deed, attained Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi, and for the sake of the whole world spoke this Dharma which is difficult to believe. This is extremely difficult.”
When the Buddha had spoken this sutra, Shariputra and all the Bhikshus, and the entire world of gods, humans, and asuras, hearing what the Buddha said, joyfully believed and accepted it, paid homage, and departed.
The Buddha Spoke the Amitabha Sutra
Mantra for Pulling Out the Roots of Karmic Obstacles and Attaining Rebirth in the Pure Land (Recite Three Times):
Namo amitabhaya tathagataya tadyatha amrtodbhave amrtasiddhambhave amrtavikrante amrtavikrantagamini gagana kirtikare svaha.
Modern English Translation and Explanation of “The Amitabha Sutra”
Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Iand of Shravasti, in the garden of Jeta and Anathapindika. He was accompanied by a gathering of great Bhikshus, twelve hundred fifty in all, all of them great Arhats, known to members of the assembly. … Also present was Shakra, King of the Gods, and countless others from the multitudes of heavens.
This is a story about the Buddha and his disciples. A long, long time ago, in a place called the Kingdom of Shravasti, there was a beautiful garden called the Jeta-Anathapindika Garden.
One day, the Buddha came to this garden. He didn’t come alone; he brought a large group of disciples with him. These disciples were all very powerful practitioners, and they were called “Great Arhats.” There were 1250 of them in total!
Among these disciples, there were some very famous people. For example, there was an elder named Shariputra, who was very wise. There were also Maudgalyayana, Mahakashyapa, Katyayana, Kausthila, and many others, each with their own special talents.
Not only these Arhats, but also some great practitioners called “Bodhisattvas” came. Among them were Manjushri, Ajita, Gandhahastin, Nityodyukta, and others. These Bodhisattvas all possessed profound wisdom and compassion.
Finally, even the gods in heaven came to join the excitement! Indra (Shakra) and many other gods came to attend this grand gathering.
So, in this beautiful garden, practitioners and gods from all directions gathered, quietly waiting to hear the Buddha tell a very important story.
At that time, the Buddha told the Elder Shariputra: “Passing from here to the west, beyond ten trillion Buddha-lands, there is a world called ‘Ultimate Bliss’.
The Buddha looked at his wisest disciple, Shariputra, smiled, and began to speak:
“Shariputra, did you know? If you go west from here, past ten trillion Buddha-lands, there is a special world.”
Shariputra perked up his ears and listened carefully. The Buddha continued:
“That world has a beautiful name, called ‘Ultimate Bliss’ (Sukhavati). There, there is a Buddha named Amitabha. Even now, Amitabha Buddha is teaching beings there.”
Shariputra was curious and asked, “Buddha, why is that world called Ultimate Bliss?”
The Buddha kindly replied, “That is because in that world, all living beings do not feel any pain. They are happy every day and only enjoy beautiful things. That is why we call it Ultimate Bliss.”
Moreover, Shariputra, this Land of Ultimate Bliss is everywhere surrounded by seven tiers of railings, seven layers of netting, and seven rows of trees, all formed from the four treasures. For this reason, that land is called ‘Ultimate Bliss’.
Seeing that Shariputra and the other disciples were very interested, the Buddha continued to describe that wonderful world:
“Shariputra, imagine this. In the Land of Ultimate Bliss, there is beautiful scenery everywhere.”
The Buddha smiled and gestured with his hands, “There are seven layers of magnificent railings, surrounding the whole world like seven rainbows. Not only that, there are also seven layers of exquisite nets, like starlight falling from the sky. The most amazing thing is that there are seven rows of neat trees, tall and straight, with lush branches and leaves.”
Shariputra opened his eyes wide and exclaimed, “It’s so beautiful!”
The Buddha nodded and continued, “Do you know what’s most special? These railings, nets, and trees are all made of four precious treasures. They sparkle and are so beautiful that one cannot look away.”
“Wow!” The other disciples couldn’t help but exclaim in admiration.
The Buddha concluded, “It is precisely because there are so many beautiful things that we say that world is Ultimate Bliss. Everyone there can feel incomparable joy and peace.”
Hearing this description, everyone fell into a reverie, as if they were already in that beautiful world.
Moreover, Shariputra, the Land of Ultimate Bliss has pools of the seven jewels, filled with the waters of eight virtues… Shariputra, the Land of Ultimate Bliss is complete with such a merit and adornment!
Seeing that everyone was focused, the Buddha continued to describe the wonderful Pure Land:
“Shariputra, can you imagine? In the Land of Ultimate Bliss, there are many beautiful lakes. These lakes are not ordinary lakes; they are made of seven precious treasures!”
Shariputra asked curiously, “Buddha, the water in these lakes must be very special, right?”
The Buddha nodded and smiled, “That’s right! These lakes are filled with water of eight virtues. This water is not only clear but also refreshes the body and mind.”
He continued to describe, “The bottom of the distinct lakes is covered with gold sand, glistening. The paths by the lakes are inlaid with gold, silver, lapis lazuli, and crystal, so beautiful that one cannot look away.”
“It’s truly beautiful!” the disciples exclaimed.
The Buddha continued, “By the lakes, there are also beautiful pavilions. These pavilions are decorated with gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, and some gems you may not have seen, such as mother-of-pearl, red pearls, and agate, colorful and breathtaking.”
“And the most amazing thing is the lotus flowers blooming in the lakes.” The Buddha’s eyes twinkled, “These lotus flowers are as big as carriage wheels! There are blue, yellow, red, and white ones, each color emitting a soft light with a pleasant fragrance.”
Shariputra and the other disciples listened quietly, entranced, as if they saw these beautiful scenes with their own eyes.
The Buddha finally said, “Shariputra, the Land of Ultimate Bliss is just this wonderful. It possesses such merit and adornment; it is a place truly worth longing for.”
After hearing this, everyone fell into contemplation, imagining the appearance of this beautiful world.
Moreover, Shariputra, in that Buddha-land, heavenly music plays continually. The ground is made of yellow gold. … Shariputra, the Land of Ultimate Bliss is complete with such a merit and adornment!
Seeing everyone intoxicated by the beauty of the Pure Land, the Buddha continued:
“Shariputra, did you know? There are even more wonderful things in the Land of Ultimate Bliss.”
Shariputra and the other disciples perked up their ears and listened attentively.
The Buddha smiled and said, “There, beautiful music is always playing in the sky, just like angels singing.”
“Wow!” everyone exclaimed.
“Moreover,” the Buddha continued, “the ground there is not soil, but paved with pure gold.”
The disciples opened their eyes wide, finding it hard to imagine such a luxurious scene.
The Buddha added, “Every day, whether day or night, every four hours, a special rain of flowers falls from the sky. These flowers are called Mandarava flowers, very beautiful and fragrant.”
“How do people live there?” a disciple asked curiously.
The Buddha explained, “The people in the Land of Ultimate Bliss do something very special every morning. They use their robes to catch various beautiful flowers and then fly to other Buddha-lands to make offerings to the Buddhas there.”
“They can fly?” the disciples asked in surprise.
The Buddha nodded, “Yes, they can fly freely. When it’s time to eat, they fly back to the Land of Ultimate Bliss. After eating, they take a walk in the beautiful gardens and enjoy the wonderful time.”
Shariputra listened with fascination and sighed, “Buddha, the Land of Ultimate Bliss is truly wonderful, full of merit and adornment.”
The Buddha looked kindly at the disciples and said, “Yes, Shariputra. The Land of Ultimate Bliss is indeed a place full of miracles and beauty.”
Upon hearing this description, all the disciples fell into deep longing, their hearts filled with yearning for this beautiful world.
Furthermore, Shariputra, in this land, there are birds of all sorts of wondrous, variegated colors: white cranes, peacocks, parrots, egrets, kalavinkas, and two-headed birds. … Its beings, hearing these sounds, are altogether mindful of the Buddha, mindful of the Dharma, and mindful of the Sangha.
Seeing the disciples attracted by the beauty of the Pure Land, the Buddha continued:
“Shariputra, let me tell you some more wonderful things about the Land of Ultimate Bliss. Not only is the scenery beautiful there, but there are also many beautiful birds.”
Shariputra asked curiously, “What kind of birds are they, Buddha?”
The Buddha smiled and said, “There are white cranes, beautiful peacocks, talking parrots, and egrets. Even more amazing, there is a bird called the Kalavinka, whose voice is particularly melodious. There is also a strange bird called the two-headed bird (Jivajivaka).”
“Wow!” the disciples exclaimed, “These birds must be very special?”
The Buddha nodded, “Yes, these birds are not only beautiful in appearance, but what’s wonderful is that they sing. Every day, regardless of day or night, every four hours, these birds will sing together.”
“What songs do they sing?” a disciple asked curiously.
The Buddha explained, “These birds don’t sing ordinary songs; they sing the teachings of the Dharma. Their songs contain important Dharma contents such as the Five Roots, Five Powers, Seven Bodhi Shares, and Eightfold Noble Path.”
Shariputra said in surprise, “It’s truly amazing! Even the birds are spreading the Dharma.”
The Buddha continued, “Yes, and even more wonderfully, when the people in the Land of Ultimate Bliss hear the songs of these birds, they naturally think of the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha in their hearts. These songs help them maintain their faith in the Dharma and their enthusiasm for practice at all times.”
After hearing this, all the disciples showed expressions of wonder and longing. They seemed to hear those wonderful birds singing, their hearts filled with respect for the Dharma and yearning for the Land of Ultimate Bliss.
Shariputra, do not say that these birds are born as retribution for their sin. Why? … Shariputra, the Land of Ultimate Bliss is complete with such a merit and adornment!
Seeing that the disciples were curious about the birds in the Pure Land, the Buddha continued to explain:
“Shariputra, don’t misunderstand. These birds didn’t become birds because they did bad things.”
Shariputra asked in confusion, “Buddha, what do you mean?”
The Buddha smiled and explained, “In the Land of Ultimate Bliss, the three evil paths of hell, hungry ghosts, and animals simply do not exist. In fact, even the words for these do not exist there, let alone the actual suffering.”
“Then where do these birds come from?” a disciple asked curiously.
The Buddha replied, “These birds are actually transformed by Amitabha Buddha using his supernatural powers. His purpose is to let the sound of the Dharma spread throughout the world so that all beings can hear it.”
The disciples listened and showed expressions of sudden realization.
The Buddha continued, “Not only that, in the Land of Ultimate Bliss, when a gentle breeze blows through those jewel trees and jewel nets, it makes a beautiful sound. This sound is as pleasant as hundreds and thousands of musical instruments playing at the same time.”
“It’s truly wonderful!” the disciples praised.
The Buddha nodded, “Yes, and what’s even more amazing is that when people hear these sounds, they naturally think of the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha in their hearts. These sounds help them maintain their faith in the Dharma and their enthusiasm for practice at all times.”
Shariputra said with emotion, “Buddha, the Land of Ultimate Bliss is truly amazing, full of so much merit and adornment.”
The Buddha looked kindly at the disciples and concluded, “That’s right, Shariputra. The Land of Ultimate Bliss is such a place full of miracles and beauty, where everything helps sentient beings practice and move towards enlightenment.”
After hearing this, all the disciples fell into deep thought, their hearts filled with yearning for this beautiful world and determination to practice.
Shariputra, what do you think? Why is this Buddha called Amitabha? … Shariputra, that Buddha-land is complete with such a merit and adornment!
The Buddha looked at Shariputra and suddenly asked, “Shariputra, do you know why that Buddha is called Amitabha?”
Shariputra shook his head, curiously waiting for the Buddha’s explanation.
The Buddha smiled and said, “Amitabha Buddha has two special characteristics. First, his light is incredibly powerful and can illuminate the worlds in the ten directions without any obstruction. It is like an ever-burning lamp illuminating the entire universe.”
“Wow!” the disciples exclaimed.
The Buddha continued, “Second, the lifespans of Amitabha Buddha and the people in the Land of Ultimate Bliss are extremely long, so long that it is hard to calculate. It can be said to be infinite and boundless, without end.”
Shariputra asked, “Buddha, how long has it been since Amitabha Buddha attained Buddhahood?”
The Buddha replied, “It has been ten kalpas since Amitabha Buddha attained Buddhahood. This time is very, very long for us.”
“Are there many practitioners in the Land of Ultimate Bliss?” a disciple asked curiously.
The Buddha nodded, “Yes, in the Land of Ultimate Bliss, there are countless voice-hearer disciples who have already become Arhats. Not only that, there are also countless Bodhisattvas. Their number is so great that we cannot calculate it.”
Shariputra said with emotion, “Buddha, the Land of Ultimate Bliss is truly amazing, not only is the environment beautiful, but there are also so many highly achieved practitioners.”
The Buddha looked kindly at the disciples and concluded, “Yes, Shariputra. The Land of Ultimate Bliss is such a place full of merit and adornment. Everything there is so beautiful and so supreme.”
Moreover, Shariputra, the beings born in the Land of Ultimate Bliss are all Avaivartika. … Shariputra, one cannot be born in that land with few good roots, blessings, virtues, and causal connections.
The Buddha looked at Shariputra and the other disciples and continued to recount the wonders of the Pur Land: “Shariputra, did you know? Beings born in the Land of Ultimate Bliss have a special status.”
Shariputra asked curiously, “What status is that, Buddha?”
The Buddha smiled and said, “They are all Avaivartika. This means that they will never retrogress on the path of practice and will always move forward.”
The disciples showed surprised expressions.
The Buddha continued, “Not only that, there are also many ‘One-Life-to-Be-Bound’ Bodhisattvas in the Land of Ultimate Bliss. These Bodhisattvas only need to be reborn one more time to become Buddhas.”
“Are there many of them?” a disciple asked.
The Buddha answered, “Too many to count! Our number system can’t calculate it at all; we can only say it is infinite and boundless, like the stars in the sky.”
Hearing this, Shariputra was thoughtful. The Buddha looked at him and said gently, “Shariputra, if someone hears about the Land of Ultimate Bliss, they should make a vow to be reborn there.”
“Why, Buddha?” Shariputra asked.
The Buddha explained, “Because there, you can be together with so many great practitioners. You can learn from each other and improve together. What a rare opportunity this is!”
Then, the Buddha’s tone became more serious, “However, Shariputra, remember one thing. To be born in the Land of Ultimate Bliss cannot be achieved by just a little bit of merit.”
“Then what is needed?” The disciples pricked up their ears.
The Buddha said kindly, “It requires long-term accumulation of good roots and virtues. It’s like planting a tree; you have to constantly water and fertilize it for it to grow tall and strong. Similarly, we must constantly practice and accumulate merit to have the opportunity to be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss.”
The disciples were deeply touched after hearing this. They understood that to be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss, they needed to be determined and practice hard. Everyone’s eyes shone with steadfast light, as if they had already begun their own path of practice.
Shariputra, if a good man or a good woman hears of Amitabha Buddha and holds fast to his name… Shariputra, seeing these benefits, I speak these words: If sentient beings hear this, they should make a vow to be born in that land.
The Buddha looked at Shariputra and the other disciples, his eyes full of love, and continued: “Shariputra, let me tell you some good news.”
Everyone listened attentively.
The Buddha smiled and said, “If a kind man or woman hears the name of Amitabha Buddha and can concentrate on reciting this name, even for just one day, two days, three days, four days, five days, six days, or seven days, as long as they can recite it single-mindedly without confusion, something wonderful will happen.”
“What will happen?” Shariputra asked curiously.
The Buddha explained, “When this person’s life is about to end, Amitabha Buddha will appear before him with many holy ones.”
The disciples exclaimed, evidently deeply moved by this scene.
The Buddha continued, “Even more amazingly, when this person is at the end of their life, their mind will not be confused or afraid. Their mind will remain calm and clear. Just like that, they can be reborn in Amitabha Buddha’s Land of Ultimate Bliss.”
“Is it really that simple?” a disciple couldn’t help but ask.
The Buddha said kindly, “It seems simple, but it is not easy to be single-minded and unconfused. This requires sincere faith and sustained effort.”
Then, the Buddha’s tone became more serious: “Shariputra, I see the great benefit of doing this, so I tell everyone this method. If anyone hears these words, they should make a vow to be born in that beautiful land.”
Shariputra, just as I now praise the inconceivable benefit of Amitabha Buddha’s merit, so too in the East are Akshobhya Buddha… speaks these sincere words: ‘All you sentient beings should believe in this sutra which praises inconceivable merit and which is protected and kept in mind by all Buddhas.’
The Buddha looked around at Shariputra and the other disciples who were listening intently and continued: “Shariputra, did you know? I am not the only one praising the inconceivable merit of Amitabha Buddha.”
Shariputra asked curiously, “Who else is praising him, Buddha?”
The Buddha smiled and said, “In the East, there are many great Buddhas. For example, Akshobhya Buddha, Sumeru Marks Buddha, Great Sumeru Buddha, Sumeru Light Buddha, Wondrous Sound Buddha, and numberless other Buddhas like the sands of the Ganges.”
The disciples were amazed, imagining the scene of so many Buddhas.
The Buddha continued, “These Buddhas are all doing something very special in their own lands. They extend their long tongues, which are large enough to cover the entire three thousand great thousand worlds.”
“Wow!” the disciples exclaimed, “Why do they do that?”
The Buddha explained, “They do this to say a very important sentence. They say: ‘All you sentient beings should believe in this sutra. This sutra praises inconceivable merit and is protected and kept in mind by all Buddhas.’”
Shariputra said thoughtfully, “Buddha, this is truly incredible. All the Buddhas are praising this sutra; it must be a very supreme teaching.”
The Buddha nodded kindly, “Yes, Shariputra. This sutra tells of Amitabha Buddha’s merit and how to be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss. It is so important that all Buddhas are proclaiming it.”
After hearing this, the disciples showed expressions of awe and excitement. They realized they were listening to a very precious teaching, a method praised even by Buddhas of other worlds.
Everyone’s heart was filled with gratitude and determination, hoping to study and practice this supreme method well and one day be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss.
Shariputra, in the Southern world are Sun Moon Lamp Buddha… speaks these sincere words: ‘All you sentient beings should believe in this sutra which praises inconceivable merit and which is protected and kept in mind by all Buddhas.’
The Buddha looked at Shariputra and the other disciples and continued to recount: “Shariputra, not only are the Buddhas in the East praising this sutra, but the Buddhas in the South are doing the same.”
Shariputra asked curiously, “Which Buddhas are in the South?”
The Buddha smiled and said, “In the Southern world, there are many great Buddhas. For example, Sun Moon Lamp Buddha, whose wisdom illuminates the world like the sun and moon; Well-Known Light Buddha, whose reputation spreads like light in the ten directions; Great Blazing Shoulders Buddha, whose majestic virtue burns like a great fire; Sumeru Lamp Buddha, whose wisdom is as high as Mount Sumeru; and Infinite Vigor Buddha, whose practice never ceases.”
“Wow!” the disciples exclaimed, “The names of these Buddhas are so interesting.”
The Buddha nodded, “Yes, and not only these, there are Buddhas as many as the sands of the Ganges.”
“Did these Southern Buddhas do the same thing as the Eastern Buddhas?” a disciple asked.
The Buddha replied, “That’s right. Each of them extended their long tongue in their own land, large enough to cover the entire three thousand great thousand worlds.”
“Did they say the same thing too?” Shariputra asked.
The Buddha said kindly, “Yes, Shariputra. They all said: ‘All you sentient beings should believe in this sutra. This sutra praises inconceivable merit and is protected and kept in mind by all Buddhas.’”
Shariputra, in the Western world are Amitayus Buddha… speaks these sincere words: ‘All you sentient beings should believe in this sutra which praises inconceivable merit and which is protected and kept in mind by all Buddhas.’
The Buddha gaze turned from the East and South to the West, and he continued to introduce to the disciples: “Shariputra, there are also many great Buddhas in the Western world, and they are also praising this sutra.”
Shariputra and the other disciples perked up their ears and listened attentively.
The Buddha smiled and said, “In the West, there is Amitayus Buddha, whose lifespan cannot be calculated; Infinite Marks Buddha, who has countless beautiful marks; Infinite Banners Buddha, whose majestic virtue is like a high banner; Great Light Buddha, whose light of wisdom shines in four directions; Great Brightness Buddha, who dispels the darkness of the world; Jewel Marks Buddha, whose marks are like treasures; and Pure Light Buddha, whose light is incomparably pure.”
“The names of these Buddhas are so special!” a disciple exclaimed.
The Buddha nodded, “Yes, and not only these, there are Buddhas as many as the sands of the Ganges in the Western world.”
“Buddha, did these Western Buddhas do the same thing as the Eastern and Southern Buddhas?” Shariputra asked.
The Buddha replied kindly, “That’s right, Shariputra. Each of them also extended their long tongue in their own land, large enough to cover the entire three thousand great thousand worlds.”
“Did they say the same words?” another disciple asked curiously.
The Buddha said gently, “Yes. They all said in unison: ‘All you sentient beings should believe in this sutra. This sutra praises inconceivable merit and is protected and kept in mind by all Buddhas.’”
Shariputra, in the Northern world are Blazing Shoulders Buddha… speaks these sincere words: ‘All you sentient beings should believe in this sutra which praises inconceivable merit and which is protected and kept in mind by all Buddhas.’
The Buddha’s gaze continued to turn to the North, introducing to the disciples: “Shariputra, there are also many great Buddhas in the Northern world, and they are also praising this sutra.”
Shariputra and the other disciples listened seriously, amazed at the vastness of this world.
The Buddha said kindly, “In the North, there is Blazing Shoulders Buddha, whose shoulders emit flames of wisdom; Most Victorious Sound Buddha, whose voice is the most beautiful; Hard to Injure Buddha, whose will is firm and unshakable; Sun Birth Buddha, who brings light to the world like the sun every day; and Net Brightness Buddha, whose light of wisdom spreads everywhere like a net.”
“Do the names of these Buddhas have any special meaning?” a disciple asked curiously.
The Buddha smiled and explained, “Every name represents the characteristics or wishes of that Buddha. For example, the name of Hard to Injure Buddha tells us that there will be difficulties on the path of practice, but we should not give up easily.”
“Buddha, are these Buddhas in the North the same as the Buddhas in other directions?” Shariputra asked.
The Buddha nodded, “Yes, Shariputra. These Buddhas in the North, and countless other Buddhas like the sands of the Ganges, also extended their long tongues in their own lands, large enough to cover the entire three thousand great thousand worlds.”
“Did they say the same words?” another disciple asked expectantly.
The Buddha replied gently, “That’s right. They all said the same words: ‘All you sentient beings should believe in this sutra. This sutra praises inconceivable merit and is protected and kept in mind by all Buddhas.’”
Shariputra, in the World Below are Lion Buddha… speaks these sincere words: ‘All you sentient beings should believe in this sutra which praises inconceivable merit and which is protected and kept in mind by all Buddhas.’
The Buddha’s gaze continued to look to the World Below, introducing to the disciples: “Shariputra, you might be surprised that even in the World Below, there are many great Buddhas who are also praising this sutra.”
Shariputra and the other disciples showed surprised expressions; they had never thought the world was so vast.
The Buddha smiled kindly and said, “In the World Below, there is Lion Buddha, whose courage and wisdom are like the lion king; Well-Known Buddha, whose fame spreads far and wide; Famous Light Buddha, whose name shines like light; Dharma Buddha, who deeply understands and teaches the truth; Dharma Banner Buddha, who holds high the banner of the Dharma; and Dharma Holding Buddha, who persistently upholds the Dharma.”
“Buddha, these names sound very powerful!” a disciple exclaimed.
The Buddha nodded, “Yes, every name represents the characteristics and wishes of that Buddha. For example, the name of Dharma Holding Buddha tells us to persistently learn and practice the Dharma.”
“Buddha, are these Buddhas in the World Below the same as the Buddhas in other directions?” Shariputra asked curiously.
The Buddha replied, “That’s right, Shariputra. These Buddhas in the World Below, and countless other Buddhas like the sands of the Ganges, also extended their long tongues in their own lands, large enough to cover the entire three thousand great thousand worlds.”
“Did they say the same words?” another disciple asked expectantly.
The Buddha said gently, “Yes, they all said in unison: ‘All you sentient beings should believe in this sutra. This sutra praises inconceivable merit and is protected and kept in mind by all Buddhas.’”
Shariputra, in the World Above are Brahma Voice Buddha… speaks these sincere words: ‘All you sentient beings should believe in this sutra which praises inconceivable merit and which is protected and kept in mind by all Buddhas.’
The Buddha’s gaze finally turned to the World Above, introducing to the disciples: “Shariputra, there are also many great Buddhas in the World Above, and they are also praising this sutra.”
Shariputra and the other disciples listened with held breath, feeling incredibly amazed at this boundless world of Buddhas.
The Buddha smiled kindly and said, “In the World Above, there is Brahma Voice Buddha, whose voice is pure like Brahma; Constellation King Buddha, who is like the king of stars; Superior Fragrance Buddha, who emits the most supreme fragrance; Fragrant Light Buddha, whose light is like fragrance; Great Blazing Shoulders Buddha, whose shoulders emit flames of wisdom; Variegated Jewel Flower Adornment Body Buddha, whose body is dignified like colorful jewel flowers; Sala Tree King Buddha, who is like the tall and straight Sala tree king; Jewel Flower Virtue Buddha, who possesses virtues like jewel flowers; Vision of All Meaning Buddha, who can perceive the true meaning of all things; and Such as Mount Sumeru Buddha, whose wisdom is as high as Mount Sumeru.”
“Wow! Buddha, these names sound truly wonderful!” a disciple exclaimed.
The Buddha nodded, “Yes, every name contains profound meaning, representing the characteristics of that Buddha and their way of teaching sentient beings.”
“Buddha, are these Buddhas in the World Above the same as the Buddhas in other directions?” Shariputra asked curiously.
The Buddha replied, “That’s right, Shariputra. These Buddhas in the World Above, and countless other Buddhas like the sands of the Ganges, also extended their long tongues in their own lands, large enough to cover the entire three thousand great thousand worlds.”
“Did they say the same words?” another disciple asked expectantly.
The Buddha said gently, “Yes, they all said in unison: ‘All you sentient beings should believe in this sutra. This sutra praises inconceivable merit and is protected and kept in mind by all Buddhas.’”
Shariputra, what do you think? Why is it called the ‘Sutra Protected and Kept in Mind by All Buddhas’? … Therefore, Shariputra, all of you should believe and accept my words and what all the Buddhas speak.
The Buddha looked at Shariputra and asked gently, “Shariputra, do you know why this sutra is called the ‘Sutra Protected and Kept in Mind by All Buddhas’?”
Shariputra and the other disciples looked at the Buddha curiously, waiting for his explanation.
The Buddha smiled and said, “Let me tell you the reason. If a good man or woman hears this sutra and can remember it, or hears the names of the Buddhas I just mentioned, they will receive the protection and care of all Buddhas.”
“Really? Buddha, that’s incredible!” the disciples exclaimed.
The Buddha nodded and continued, “Not only that, these good men and good women will never retrogress on the path of practice. They will always move forward and finally reach the state of Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi.”
“Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi? What’s that?” a young disciple asked curiously.
The Buddha explained kindly, “That is the state of Buddhahood, the highest state of enlightenment.”
The disciples showed expressions of longing and awe after hearing this.
The Buddha looked at them and said earnestly, “So, Shariputra, all of you should believe what I say, and also believe what all other Buddhas say.”
Shariputra nodded deeply and said, “Buddha, we understand. This sutra is truly supreme; we will cherish it and study it seriously.”
The other disciples also expressed their agreement, their eyes shining with firm light.
The Buddha looked at them with gratification, knowing that these disciples had understood the importance of this sutra. He believed that they would spread this supreme method and help more beings obtain liberation.
In this way, the Buddha’s teachings were deeply imprinted in everyone’s heart, becoming a beacon on their path of practice, guiding them towards the other shore of enlightenment.
Shariputra, if there are people who have already made a vow… Therefore, Shariputra, all good men and good women who have faith should make a vow to be born in that land.
The Buddha looked at Shariputra and the other disciples, a kind smile on his face, and continued: “Shariputra, let me tell you something very important.”
All the disciples pricked up their ears and listened attentively.
The Buddha said, “If someone has made a vow in the past, or is making a vow now, or will make a vow in the future, hoping to be born in the land of Amitabha Buddha, all these people will receive a great benefit.”
“What benefit is that, Buddha?” a disciple asked curiously.
The Buddha replied kindly, “These people will all represent non-retrogression on the path of practice, always moving forward, and finally reaching the state of Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi.”
The disciples showed surprised expressions.
The Buddha continued, “And, whether these people have already arrived in the land of Amitabha Buddha, are being born there now, or will be born there in the future, they can all receive this benefit.”
Shariputra said thoughtfully, “Buddha, this is truly supreme. This means that as long as we make a vow to be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss, we have already set foot on the path to Buddhahood.”
The Buddha nodded affirmatively, “That’s right, Shariputra. Because of this, I want to tell all good men and women, if you believe in this method, you should make a vow to be born in the land of Amitabha Buddha.”
Shariputra, just as I now praise the inconceivable merit of all the Buddhas… ‘Shakyamuni Buddha is able to do extremely difficult and rare deeds… and for the sake of all sentient beings, speak this Dharma which is difficult for the whole world to believe.’
The Buddha looked at Shariputra and the other disciples, a slight smile on his face, and continued: “Shariputra, did you know? Just as I praised the inconceivable merit of those Buddhas just now, they are also praising my merit.”
The disciples showed surprised expressions; they didn’t expect Buddhas from other worlds to praise their teacher too.
The Buddha said gently, “Those Buddhas say: ‘Shakyamuni Buddha has done something extremely rare and difficult.’”
“What is it, Buddha?” Shariputra asked curiously.
The Buddha explained, “They say that I was able to attain Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi in this Saha World, the world we are in now, which is very difficult.”
“Why is it so difficult?” a young disciple asked.
The Buddha said kindly, “Because our world is full of five kinds of turbidities.”
Seeing the confused expressions of the disciples, the Buddha further explained, “First is the turbidity of the kalpa (time), meaning chaotic times; second is the turbidity of views, meaning people hold wrong views; third is the turbidity of afflictions, meaning human hearts are full of afflictions; fourth is the turbidity of sentient beings, meaning the low quality of beings; fifth is the turbidity of life, meaning human life is short.”
The disciples felt a little depressed after hearing this. But the Buddha continued, “Although our world is like this, I still attained Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi here and explained this Dharma which is difficult for the whole world to believe.”
Shariputra suddenly realized, “So that’s it! Buddha, not only did you attain enlightenment yourself, but you also taught us in such a difficult environment. It’s truly amazing!”
The other disciples also nodded one after another, their eyes full of admiration.
The Buddha smiled and said, “This is why Buddhas of other worlds are praising me. But remember, each of us has the potential to become a Buddha. As long as we practice hard, one day we can also help more beings like me.”
The disciples felt very inspired. They understood that although the world they lived in was full of difficulties, as long as they persisted in practice, they would surely overcome these obstacles and finally attain enlightenment.
Shariputra, you should know that I, in the Evil World of the Five Turbidities, did this difficult deed… This is extremely difficult.
The Buddha looked at Shariputra and the other disciples, with an expression of kindness and determination on his face, and continued: “Shariputra, you should know, I did a very difficult thing in this world full of five turbidities.”
Shariputra and the other disciples listened with held breath, waiting for the Buddha’s further explanation.
The Buddha said slowly, “In such a difficult environment, I attained Anuttara-Samyak-Sambodhi. This is like a white lotus flower blooming in the mud; it is very difficult.”
The disciples showed expressions of admiration.
The Buddha continued, “Not only that, I also have to explain this Dharma which is difficult to believe to all sentient beings. This is like lighting a lamp in a dark night to guide those who are lost.”
“Buddha, why is this Dharma difficult to believe?” a young disciple asked curiously.
The Buddha explained kindly, “Because this Dharma speaks of truths beyond our daily experience. It’s like telling a fish what the sky looks like, or telling a bird the depth of the ocean; it’s not easy to understand.”
Shariputra said thoughtfully, “I understand, Buddha. Not only did you attain enlightenment yourself, but you also strive to make us who do not yet understand understand. This is indeed a very difficult thing.”
The Buddha nodded, “Yes, Shariputra. This is like explaining complex principles in simple words so that everyone can understand. This is indeed a very difficult thing.”
The other disciples were deeply moved by the Buddha’s great compassion. They realized that the Buddha not only accomplished his own practice but was also willing to spend so much effort to teach them; he was truly great.
The Buddha finally said, “However, no matter how difficult it is, I will continue to do so. Because I hope every sentient being can leave suffering and attain happiness, and finally reach the state of enlightenment.”
The disciples were moved to tears. They swore in their hearts that they would practice well, live up to the Buddha’s teachings, and in the future, like the Buddha, help more people onto the path of enlightenment.
In this way, the Buddha’s words were like sweet dew, moistening everyone’s heart, filling them with confidence and hope for the path of practice.
When the Buddha had spoken this sutra, Shariputra and all the Bhikshus, and the entire world of gods, humans, and asuras, hearing what the Buddha said, joyfully believed and accepted it, paid homage, and departed.
The Buddha finished speaking this Amitabha Sutra, looked around at Shariputra and all the other Bhikshus. Not only that, the gods in the sky, the beings in the human world, and even the Asuras who rarely appeared were listening attentively.
The whole world seemed to stand still, everyone immersed in the Buddha’s teachings.
When the Buddha’s last word fell, a burst of joyful sound suddenly erupted at the scene. All those who heard the sutra, whether humans, gods, or Asuras, had smiles of happiness and gratitude on their faces.
Shariputra stood up and said on behalf of everyone, “Buddha, thank you for explaining such a supreme method to us. We all deeply believe every word you said.”
The other Bhikshus also nodded in agreement. The gods danced in the air, and the Asuras rarely showed kind expressions.
At this time, everyone stood up coincidentally and bowed respectfully to the Buddha. Their movements were uniform, like waves of wheat rising and falling in the wind.
After bowing, everyone looked at the Buddha reluctantly for the last time before slowly leaving. Some walked discussing the teachings they just heard, while others were immersed in their own thoughts.
The gods in the sky turned into rainbows and disappeared, and the Asuras quietly returned to their own world. The beings in the human world returned to their homes with hearts full of joy and confidence.
In this way, the Dharma assembly of The Amitabha Sutra came to a successful conclusion. But the Buddha’s teachings, like seeds, were deeply planted in everyone’s heart, waiting for the day to blossom and bear fruit, allowing more people to attain liberation.
The Buddha Spoke the Amitabha Sutra. Mantra for Pulling Out the Roots of Karmic Obstacles and Attaining Rebirth in the Pure Land (Recite Three Times): Namo amitabhaya tathagataya tadyatha amrtodbhave amrtasiddhambhave amrtavikrante amrtavikrantagamini gagana kirtikare svaha.
After The Amitabha Sutra was spoken, the Buddha said to everyone: “Now, I want to teach you a very special mantra. This mantra has magical power and can eliminate all your karmic obstacles and help you be reborn in the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.”
All the disciples pricked up their ears and listened attentively.
The Buddha recited slowly and clearly:
“Namo amitabhaya tathagataya tadyatha amrtodbhave amrtasiddhambhave amrtavikrante amrtavikrantagamini gagana kirtikare svaha.”
The Buddha recited it once, then repeated it two more times. Each time, the disciples recited silently along. Although they might not fully understand the meaning of these syllables, they could feel the sacred power contained in this mantra.
The sound of chanting echoed in the air, as if a magical energy was flowing around. Some disciples felt light all over, while others felt incomparably calm inside.
The Buddha smiled and said to everyone, “This mantra is like a magic key that can open the door to the Land of Ultimate Bliss for you. When you encounter difficulties or feel lost, recite this mantra. It will give you strength, help you overcome obstacles, and finally reach Amitabha Buddha’s Pure Land.”
The disciples nodded seriously and kept this mantra firmly in mind. From that day on, whether during practice or in daily life, they would recite this mantra often, feeling the peace and strength it brought.
In this way, the teachings of The Amitabha Sutra and this magical mantra became a beacon on the path of practice for all disciples, guiding them to move forward constantly towards the direction of the Land of Ultimate Bliss.
